Hair loss is incredibly common, especially with aging. While people commonly think of genetic male-pattern baldness, hair loss can also effect women. Regardless of age or gender, hair loss can cause significant issues with self esteem.

Thankfully, when addressed early, it is possible to reduce hair loss and grow back healthy, natural hair. PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is one such treatment option. PRP injections are a natural and low-risk treatment option to help patients address areas of thinning hair or hair loss, stimulating healthy hair growth. At Art Aesthetica in Chicago, Dr. Skura offers PRP for hair rejuvenation.

What is PRP for Hair Rejuvenation?

PRP injections involve first processing the patient’s own blood to concentrate platelets within the plasma, hence the name “platelet-rich plasma.” When this step is complete, the PRP is then injected directly into the scalp in areas where the hair is thinning. The PRP encourages healthy new cell growth, which is why it is effective in restoring and encouraging healthy follicles and new hair production. Dr. Skura will advise that PRP for hair rejuvenation is only effective for patients who still have some active hair follicles in the treatment area. The treatment is best for those who notice some thinning or hair loss rather than large areas of baldness. During a consultation, she will assess your degree of hair loss and recommend whether PRP rejuvenation is a viable option for you.

What to Expect During Treatment

PRP rejuvenation is a three-step process which can take place after first determining that you are a good candidate through a thorough a consultation.

First, the patient’s blood is drawn, typically from the arm. The blood is placed into a centrifuge, which is a device that rapidly spins to separate the fluids within the blood. Preparing the blood in the centrifuge can be completed in about ten minutes.

Following preparing the blood in the centrifuge, Dr. Skura will collect the now-separated fluid to gather PRP. The blood will have separated into three layers: platelet-poor plasma, red blood cells, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

Finally, the PRP can be drawn into a syringe and injected into the treatment areas. The total number of injections will vary depending on each patient’s treatment needs and aesthetic goals.

Aftercare Instructions

PRP rejuvenation is a low-risk treatment which does not require downtime. Patients are welcome to drive themselves home and go about their normal routines after the treatment if they choose. Some common side effects include sensitivity, redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection or blood draw site. Some patients also report a tingling sensation where the PRP is injected. These side effects typically subside within 2-4 days.

After your PRP for hair loss treatment, you should avoid exercise, blood-thinning medications (including aspirin or other anti-inflammatories), applying hair products, or alcohol, caffeine, and smoking as directed by Dr. Skura.
